About 1873. Zdanie was built in the years 1654-1655 and was to become the city gates, but at the same time Amsterdam has expanded its borders, and the gate at this point become unnecessary. That construction is not lost, we decided to move here with Dams oil market, turning the gate building Waag. Channel on which there was a building, asleep, the resulting area took oil market, which is builded apartment buildings and Chamber thus found itself in the center. What Waag building stands is not parallel to other buildings, but at an angle to them, due to the orientation of the buildings on the canal took place here, on the banks of which it was built, while the rest of the buildings were built with a focus on the newly formed street. In 1874 the building was demolished, the market closed, the square pitched Square, and in 1876 the oil market area was renamed Rembrandt Square, moving to its center a monument to the artist.
