Greenwich Street, north from Battery Place, as photographed from the downtown "El" platform. Shown are details of the 6th and 9th Avenue "El" station prior to demolition. This is the first station out of South Ferry and is the oldest of any in the city. Charles C. Harvey, the inventor, was permitted to erect an experimental line from this point to 29th Street. Commencing service in 1867 by wire rope locomotion, it failed in 1870 and was succeeded by the N. Y. Elevated Railroad Company. This in turn became the Manhattan Railway Company.
