Monument to Chopin in Warsaw is a bronze cast monument to Frederic Chopin in the Lazienki park in Warsaw, depicting the figure of a composer sitting under a stylized Mazovian willow. Together with the Warsaw mermaid, the column of Sigismund III, the Palace on the Water and the Palace of Culture and Science, it is one of the most recognizable sights of Warsaw. The monument was sculptured by Vaclav Szymanowski, who won the competition opened in 1908, and was to be installed in 1910, the hundredth anniversary of the birth of the pianist. The jury was hosted by such prominent artists as Antoine Bourdelle, Paul Albert Bartolome, Hector Ferrari, Milos Kotarbinsky, Jozef Dzekonsky or Leopold Meyet. Since the project caused a lot of controversy, and work on its implementation was interrupted by the outbreak of the First World War, the monument was completed in Poland already between the wars.
