For a little more than 100 years of its existence in prison serving sentences of about 60 thousand prisoners, of which nearly 20,000 are umerli. Posle defeat in the Seven Years' War, France decided to increase its naval capabilities. For large-scale excavation and construction work in the arsenals of the two largest (Toulon and Brest), it was necessary to find a large number of cheap labor. The French monarchy has solved this problem simply: by the decree of Louis XV from 1748 all convicts serving their sentences in the galleys, sent to forced labor. To this end, in Toulon and Brest in France, the two biggest prisons were built and placed where all condemned to the galleys. Hands prisoners were built many ships, erected fortifications, built many zdaniya. Tyurma in Brest was built in the years 1749-1751 by architect Antoine Choquet de arsenal Lendu.
