Iceland > ReykjavikBertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844) was a Danish sculptor and medalist of Icelandic descent on his father's side. The statue was donated to Iceland in 1874 by the city of Copenhagen. It was originally placed on the square Austurvöllur.
