The Dohany Street Synagogue (Great Synagogue) was built by the Jewish community of Pest in 1859 and consecrated on September 6th. Ludwig Förster, who had previously built a synagogue in Vienna, was chosen as the architect. Ferenc Liszt and Camille Saint-Saens were invited to perform organ works in the synagogue. The synagogue is designed for 3,000 worshipers and is the largest synagogue in Europe. In 1931, the synagogue was built The building of the Jewish Museum of Budapest was annexed.
