View of the AT&T Building from the Museum Tower. View looking northeast. July 1984. Photo: Payne.Originally built by AT&T, the building now is owned by SONY. Known by its classical roof. Contains large gold sculpture of Mercury [The Greek messenger god Hermes] in the lobby, a symbol of telecommunications. Architect: Philip Johnson. This building, designed in the early 1980's, incorporated classicial themes - a base, a middle section and a top. It represents a return to "modern classical" architecture. This building is identified as the first major "post modern" structure. For a period of about ten years many architects and developers were inspired to follow Johnson's lead.
