Four levels of the intersection of the rebuilt 5 and 14 freeways can be seen, one above the other. At the very bottom of these, an entrance to a tunnel is visible on the bottom left. The 5 Freeway, also known as the Golden State Freeway, runs through Kern County and Los Angeles County. It was originally built as U.S. Highway 99, and was re-signed as Interstate 5 in 1964. It continues into the Santa Clarita Valley and crosses the Newhall Pass to enter the San Fernando Valley and Los Angeles. California State Route 14, also known as the Antelope Valley Freeway, is a state highway largely in the Mojave Desert. It connects U.S. Route 395 in Inyokern to Interstate 5 in Santa Clarita. Parts of Route 14's interchange with Interstate 5 have collapsed twice, once during the 1971 Sylmar earthquake and the second time during the 1994 Northridge earthquake.
