The former governor's house and office, built around 1830, demolished in 1949. After 1929, when Governor Isaac Wagemaker moved to the newly built official residence on the Klip (where the Governor's home is now located) and took an office into use in the so-called national office building (now [1996] the Archaeological Museum), it served as a marine barracks. The square, which was originally a street, is still called Kazernestraat after the former barracks. The old governor's house stood where the Plaza Daniel Leo is now
