Photograph caption dated May 8, 1983 reads, "Car that came crashing into Stak's on Century Boulevard (and La Cienega) pinned a 19-year-old tourist from New Zealand, killing him instantly, witnesses said." The unhurt driver, Johnnie Pippin, 46, fled the scene on foot, but was caught 4 hours later. He was booked on a felony charge in the vehicular manslaughter of Paul Corric. Four other people, Corric's stepmother, Gail, James Sipsey, 14, Glenda McDonald, 34, and Charles Pratt, 21, were injured.
