Tomaskirche (Church of St. Thomas) is known for the activities of the composer Johann Sebastian Bach, who for a long time led the church choir of boys. Thomas was built in the 13th century on the site of the old Market Church. The legend confirms the name of the church: after the construction of the new church, the minstrel Heinrich von Morungen gave him the relics of St. Apostle Thomas, brought from India. The church is also famous for hosting the renowned reformer Martin Luther in the 16th century. One of the oldest in Germany is the church choir of boys, which was created in the 13th century. For many centuries, the choir was led by many famous musicians and composers. Among them was I.S.Bach, a monument to which was erected near the church in 1908. Today, the choir of boys, whose age is from 9 to 18 years old, consists of about 100 people. The boys live in a boarding school, attend school and a gymnasium at the monastery.
