It was a working area with docks, a tobacco factory and a railway. The bridge, built back in 1882, eventually became overloaded, and the original decision was made - to build a second, parallel bridge nearby. The houses and shops between York Road and Bedminster Parade were demolished in the fall of 1961, a year after this photograph was taken.
