Kuusamo
In 1809, Kuusamo and the rest of Finland came under Russian rule. In the first half of the 19th year. century the region was repeatedly struck by hunger and epidemics. After the catastrophic crop failure of 1867, Kuusamo was relieved of a major famine, and its population was growing steadily. In 1868, the village of Kuusamo received the status of a city. In 1886, about 7,000 people lived here, and in 1894, up to 8,000. With the advent of forestry in the late 19th. a century ago, workers moved to the area, so in 1910 Kuusamo reached a population of 10,500.
