"Since the middle of the 13th century, Rose Square has been the central square of Cēsis city, called the Market Square. The cathedral and town hall were located nearby in accordance with the principles of medieval German town planning. There is also a penalty pole and a well in the square, which is currently replaced by a so-called Chinese house. At the beginning of the 20th century, the old market square became narrow for the city, so it was moved in the 1920s, but in 1927 it was decided to turn the square into a square in the city center with lilacs, lindens, chestnuts, and lush shrubs in the lawn. After 1936, it was renamed A. Pumpura Square, but since the 1940s it has been known as Rose Square."
