The 1956 Hungarian Revolution. On October 23, a massive student demonstration began in Budapest. Demonstrators demolished a monument to Stalin and tried to capture a number of buildings in Budapest. In this situation, on October 24, Imre Nagy was appointed to the post of Chairman of the Council of Ministers of Hungary. On November 1, Imre announced that Hungary was withdrawing from the Warsaw Pact Organization and proclaimed its neutrality. He even asked the UN to protect the sovereignty of Hungary. But this did not solve anything: on November 4, Soviet tanks entered Budapest and crushed the uprising.
