The main square in front of the Ducal Palace, Since 1806 - the residence of the Grand Dukes of Hesse. Two of the spouses of Russian emperors belonging to the Hessian house were born in Darmstadt: Maria Alexandrovna - the wife of Alexander II (née princess Maximiliana Wilhelmina Maria Hessenskaya), and Alexandra Fedorovna - the wife of Nicholas II (nee Princess Alice of Hesse- Darmstadt).
