It is a modern reconstruction of the ship on which John Cabot / John Cabot recovered on his journey. Cabot's preparation for the journey took place in Bristol. He left the harbor of Bristol on May 20, 1497 aboard the Mathew ship (18 crew members). On the morning of June 24 of the same year, he reached the northern tip of Newfoundland, i.e. territory of modern Canada. He landed, declared open land as the possession of the English crown. Then the search continued. It was during the first expedition that the famous Newfoundland Bank was opened - a huge sandbank with innumerable fish stocks. After spending about a month near the new lands, Cabot on July 20, 1497 turned the ship back to England, where he arrived safely on August 6.
