Frederick the Great had already built a small comedy house on the Gendarmenmarkt in 1776, which was later converted into the Royal National Theater and was built in 1802. In 1817 a fire raged in the newly built theater, which required another new building. In 1821 the acting house planned by architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel was opened. During the Second World War, the building of the Schauspielhaus was badly damaged during the last fighting, so that it had to be completely restored between 1979 and 1984. Since 1994 the building is no longer officially called Schauspielhaus, but a concert hall Berlin.
