Dec 4, 1938. View of the last N/B MUDC 6th Ave El train turning on to 53rd Street. Multiple-Unit Door Controls allowed one man to operate all the doors on a train from a central position. The automatic sliding doors significantly changed the appearance of the cars from open platform gate cars into closed-end vestibule cars. The motorman compartment remained in the original position inside the vestibule.View photographed in a southwesterly direction from the N.E. corner of this point showing the last train on its northward trip rounding the bend. Across same appear buildings at the N.W. corner of 52nd Street which are to be demolished and their site improved with a modern apartment house. This is the first extensive improvement on this thoroughfare resulting from the "El" demolition.
