Towering over the Rhine Valley, Godesburg Castle has been in a strategic position since the 13th century in relation to the roads leading to Bonn, the capital of the Cologne Elector, and Cologne, the economic center of the region. In the XIV century, living quarters and the main tower were completed. By the middle of the 16th century, the castle was considered almost impregnable and became a symbol of the dual power of the electors and archbishops of Cologne. At the foot of the castle was a settlement, now known as Bad Godesberg.
