Barrière d'Enfer - is paired buildings, which once served as a gateway to the farmers through the wall (Mur des Fermiers généraux) on the Place Denfert-Rochereau.Nazvanie «Barrière d'Enfer» comes from the street «Rue d'Enfer» (now called " rue Denfert-Rochereau »), which leads to after crossing the rue du Faubourg Saint-Jacques. Some historians believe that the street is named so because it was a "place of debauchery and robbery", while others believe that the name comes from the distorted Latin "through lowland" (as opposed to the Rue Saint-Jacques, which was known as "sublime."
