"Old Theater in Krakow", officially the "National Old Theater named after Helena Modzheevskaya ”(Polish: Stary Teatr w Krakowie, Narodowy Stary Teatr im. Heleny Modrzejewskiej) is a drama theater in Krakow. The old theater arose in 1781 when Krakow was part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The creators were: actor Matthew Witkowski and comedian Felix Orachevsky. The theater began operating under the name "Krakow Theater" on October 20, 1781 in the Spissky Palace near Market Square. The first director of the theater was Witkowski - until March 1782, then he left with his own acting troupe in Lviv (then in 1784 he returned to Krakow to be the director of the Krakow Theater again). In 1799, when Krakow was part of the Holy Roman Empire of the German nation, the director Jacek Klyushevsky received permission from Emperor Franz II to build a new building near Jagiellonian Street, where the theater moved in 1801 and has since been in this place.
