Going down the hill of Philopappus, you can see another Athenian attraction. This is a gloomy niche carved into the rock, taken away by a rusty iron grate. Legend has it that it is the dungeon of the legendary philosopher of antiquity, Socrates. It is believed that it was in this dungeon that he spent the last 30 days of his life, awaiting the execution of the death sentence imposed on him. The friends wanted to save Socrates, they suggested he run away, bribe the guards. But he refused, because he believed that no one in Athens dares to violate the law. He calmly drank the cup of the poison of the cycluts and died, surrounded by saddened friends, with a smile on his lips.
