The album “Views of Athens, Constantinople, Egypt and Algeria in 1870-1890.” The low rocky hill, which later became the Acropolis of the city of Athens, from ancient times attracted people as a convenient place for settlement. The slopes of the hill, whose height reaches 156 m above sea level, are steep and inaccessible from all sides, except the western one, which ensured the safety of the settlement located on it. A distance of 5 km, separating this hill from the sea, allowed its residents to use all the benefits of coastal life and at the same time protected them from attacks from the sea. All these advantages were early appreciated by the ancient inhabitants of Attica: already in the era of the new Stone Age (Neolithic) a settlement appeared here. At the beginning of the V century BC e. Greece experienced the trials of a long war with the Persians. Twice - in 480 and 479 BC. e. - Athens was invaded by enemies.
