One of the oldest stone circles in Britain. Stenness stones, as well as many of the buildings on the Orkney Islands, are made from local limestone. Initially, there were probably 12 stones standing along an ellipse. By the eighteenth century, only four remained. Today, the tallest stone reaches almost 19 feet (5.7 m) in height, and they are all about 10-15 inches (25-40 cm) thick and about 5 feet (1.5 m) wide. Stenness stones are the object of the World UNESCO heritage. Photo taken January 6, 1911
