The Palio is a competition between the blocks (counters) of Siena, in the form of horseback riding, which takes place twice a year at the Piazza del Campo: in July 10 contractions and 7 contrades compete in August. The Palio begins with a historical costume parade, and ends with processions and festivities all night. The banner of the winning counter hangs in the central square all year.
