About 150 m upstream from today's dam are the remains of the old dam (pictured) which can still be seen at low water. The original dam was built in the 1880s by engineer Carlos Cassaffousth and opened on April 12, 1890. After the new dam was built in 1944, the wall of the old dam was supposed to be blown up, but this was only partially possible.
