The current castle stands at the place of the predecessor, destroyed in 1646. Kasteel Arcen was built in 1653 by Marcelis Van Gelder, the largest local landowner. His grandson Adolf erected the monumental main building at the beginning of the XVIII century. The entire lock is made of brick, with the exception of the main entrance frame, which is made of natural stone. Initially, the main building had two side wings on the French manner, but one, from the northern side, was demolished after a fire in the XIX century, because of what a symmetrical type of building was lost. On the territory of the castle estate, the remains of two old labyrinths were found. Archaeological studies have shown that two labyrinth are dating at least until 1805, perhaps even the beginning of the XVIII century. Archaeologists believe that these are the most ancient famous labyrinths in the Netherlands.
