This view of Hope Street looking northeast from Wilshire towards Central Library includes many businesses. On the north side of the street (left) the Acacia Hotel (708 West Sixth Street), and on the south side of the street (right) a blade sign for the Church of the Open Door (540 South Hope), the Biola Book Room (560 South Hope) featuring a rooftop sign that reads "Jesus Saves" as well as painted signs, and the Hotel Val Demar (606 south Hope). Most of these buildings, including the two on the corner of Wilshire and Hope, have been demolished.Central library, located at 630 W. 5th Street in Los Angeles, was built from 1922-1926 by architects Bertram G. Goodhue and Carlton M. Winslow in the Beaux Arts style. It became a Los Angeles Historic Cultural Monument in 1967 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. In 1983 the city planned an expansion, choosing New York architectural firm Hardy, Holzman and Pfeiffer.
