Weakened earth gives way in residential area

Rain that flooded the Southland two weeks ago continues to take its toll in damage as weakened earth gave away in a section of Highland Park. The shifting ground forced evacuation of eight homes and wrecked an entire block of pavement on Rainbow Avenue. Cracks in the earth, which had been only two feet wide Monday night, began expanding at a rapid rate. Yesterday the cracks had widened to 15 feet in some spots. The area circled by a broken line in the photo was the most seriously hit by the damage. Three spots, where a large amount of land shift took place are pointed out by arrows. Photo dated: February 11, 1969.
