Photograph caption dated June 18, 1964 reads, "Robert LeMaire, Valley Times flagpole sitter, celebrated his 39th birthday yesterday as well-wishers gathered below. A birthday cake was hoisted to LeMaire who has been on the pole four days, trying to break the 211-day, 9-hour record." The Valley Times sponsored contest started on Flag Day, June 14, 1964, at the corner of Parthenia Street and Van Nuys Boulevard, Panorama City, in a Hughes Market parking lot. Robert LeMaire ascended forty feet up a flagpole to a specially built platform where he remained for 36 days before climbing back down on July 20, 1964.
