Rillly la Montagne is one of the oldest village of the Champagne region. Backing onto the mountain of Rheims and overlooking vineyards, Rilly la Montagne has kept its character and traditions of a small Champagne village. The railway from Epernay to Rheims opened on the 5th of June 1854. All trains stop at several stations in-between, including Rilly-la-Montagne. All local railway stations have been completed by 1854.This railway required a tunnel through the "Mountain of Rheims". As Rilly la Montagne is located on the "Mountain of Rheims" side, the tunnel is by the village border. Tunnel works started in 1850 and it was completed on the 1st of February 1854. It is 3450 meters long, an achievement in these years.Note: behind the station, on the photo, stands a building for the goods transported by railways. The typical roof style, with its long slopes on sides, is very typical for stations. It was buiilt with bricks & wood.
