Park Avenue, north from 52nd Street, before electrification and covering over of the upper end of the railroad yards. The growth of the railroad has resulted in destruction of the old tunnel and Avenue between 56th Street and 49th Street, where the old yards originally ended. By 1910 the Avenue will be reopened down to this point. The Steinway Piano factory, dating back to the Civil War decade, will be demolished in 1911. The small house on the N.E. corner of 53rd Street will stand there till 1924. The Racquet and Tennis Club will occupy the block opposite the Steinway factory, but the small houses on the west side between 53rd and 54th Streets will still be standing thirty years later. Compare with Galloway's photograph of the identical scene in 1932 (). 1905.
