Looking north from over the Whittier Downs Shopping Center, located on the southeast corner of Washington Boulevard (lower left) and Norwalk Boulevard (running from lower to upper left) in Santa Fe Springs. Some of the retailers include: J. C. Penney, Thrifty Drug Co., and F.W. Woolworth Co. In the foreground is another shopping center, which includes a King Cole Market, designed by A. Quincy Jones. Beyond the sea of houses in the background is the San Gabriel River. Photograph dated February 16, 1956. Designed by architectural firm Pereira & Luckman with elements to maximize visual merchandising, this $3,000,000 shopping center opened in 1955. After just three decades of use, Whittier Downs Shopping Center was razed due to declining popularity.
