Heading north along Tubb Street from Oakland Avenue, we arrive at Oakland's central square. The photograph shows a setting from the 1920s, soon after brick buildings began to rise after a 1912 fire. The white building at rear was the Bank of Oakland, today a part of Oakland's Town Hall. The string of buildings at right no longer stands, the two-story structure having come down as recently as the year 2000. The park at left was constructed in 1913 by the Mather-Smiths, who arrived in Oakland in 1908 and decided to spruce up their new hometown.
