49th Street, west from Fifth Avenue, showing the houses along "Speakeasy Row." During prohibition, most of these houses were illegal saloons. One resident in this neighborhood was compelled to place over his doorbell a card reading "Private House," to avoid being awakened at any hour by thirsty revelers. All of these houses are now gone, and the site occupied by Rockefeller Center. August 18, 1929.
