Bent rebars and debris buried Robert Lacey, construction worker, who died under 150 tons of fresh cement that caved-in on him during construction of the Santa Monica Reservoir 14 other workers were injured. Spectators watch from a distance as cranes and clam-diggers bring up chunks of rebars and cement in the effort to recover the body. A workman in the pit directs the crane. A billboard (right) advertises "Fitzgerald Const. Co.", the contractor for the reservoir. Photo dated: Apr. 11, 1949.
