Photo album ΑΘΗΝΑ 1839-1900. The Russian Church in Athens is based on the foundation of an ancient school dedicated to Apollo. In the same area during the Roman era, and in particular during the reign of Hadrian, Roman baths (Valanio) were built, the water to which passed from the tributaries of Eridanos, covered today by roads. The church itself was built in the Byzantine era, during the reign the autocratic empress Irina based on Roman baths. Around the middle of the 19th century, a nunnery was founded in the same place in honor of the Mother of God the Savior. Currently, the main temple of the monastery (Kafolikon) is the Russian Church.
