“Families can make coffee for themselves here” is a curious sign on a corner building. A self-service coffee shop (following the example of a similar Berlin one) was very popular with poor spa people, especially until 1933. Traveling on a steamer was cheap, everyone wanted to go to the sea, but cafes and restaurants were expensive, and a guesthouse (modern HB) was only available if you arrived at a few days. In the same "Little Forest Castle" they came with their coffee and for a purely nominal fee (as a deposit for dishes) received an enameled coffee pot with boiling water. There were rows of long tables and benches in the courtyard, where you could sit with sandwiches brought with you. The building was not preserved.
