The construction of the cathedral began on Christmas Day 1842, the foundation was laid by King Otton of Greece and Queen Amalia. For the construction of the temple, marble was used from 72 churches destroyed in Athens at that time (in the 1850s, a plan was developed to build new roads for the development of the capital, it provided for the demolition of 72 churches, which, according to the new plan, were in the middle of the roadway). As a whole, 3 architects worked on the project, among them Theophil von Hansen. Three years later, all construction work was completed. Finishing and painting dragged on for almost 20 years.
