Elgin Cathedral is a dilapidated but magnificent building, founded in 1224 during the era of Scottish Catholicism. In those days, the cathedral was the greatest creation of Gothic architecture. In 1270, a fire seriously damaged the cathedral and as a result of subsequent reconstructions, its building expanded significantly. In 1390, the cathedral was again damaged by fire, this time as a result of the attack of King Robert III's brother, Alexander Stuart, Earl of Buchan.
