The giant engineering works of Ransomes and Rapiers and Cocksedge and Company dominate this undated aerial view. The photograph was probably taken in 1976. The gas holder at the townís gas works (right foreground) was demolished in 1977 and work on the site to build Stoke High School in Maidenhall Approach (top centre), which opened at the end of the 1970ís, has just started. The West Bank terminal is centre left and expansion work was then underway. Ransomes and Rapier had a history in Ipswich from July 1869. Generations worked for the company, which worked on worldwide projects. ëR and Rí closed in 1987 after Robert Maxwellís Hollis Group then the parent company closed the company down. Cocksedgeís began in Suffolk in 1879 and closed in December 1985.
