The Consumers Fuel Company double fronted building at the foot of Main Street was built by grocer Newell Mansfield in 1869. Clyde B. Holmes, Sr., founder of Consumers Fuel, purchased the lower building in 1918 and added the upper in 1924. The upper building was leased to Purina Chows for many years. For over 100 years, the Holmes family have run their fuel company business from this location.
