View of the southern entrance of the galleries at the Huntington Library in San Marino. Two statues, Hercules and Telephus (left) and the Belvedere Mercury statue are positioned on each side of the stairs and walkway leading to the building's entrance. The Hercules and Telephus statue was cast in Italy by order of Francis I, King of France, early in the XVI century, for the decoration of his palace at Villeroi, in a mould taken from the orginal marble statue in Rome. The orginal statue is now in the Vatican. At the time of the Revolution it was removed and afterward purchased by Alexander, tenth Duke of Hamilton, and placed in Hamilton Palace. It was acquired from the Hamilton sale of 1882 for the Gould collection, and later it was bought for Mr. Huntington.
