In 1828, the distiller Johann Heinrich Moewes acquired several plots of land in the Kasernenstraße (left, 1859-1925 Sommerstraße, which followed the Brandenburg Gate, since 1947 Ebertstraße). Representative houses are built on the area reaching from the Spree to the extended Dorotheenstrasse (right) in the 1840s and 1850s. of the association of German engineers. Behind the corner house follows the 1858/59 by Eduard Titz in the style of the Florentine Renaissance for the department store owner Carl Rudolph Hertzog Sommerstrasse 5. of the Reichstag building. The former barracks of infantry regiment No.19 in 1767 also suffered this fate in the background in 1883.
