Fifth Avenue at N.E. corner of 46th Street, looking across the ruins of the Windsor Hotel to the 47th Street, from the S.W. corner of 46th Street, after the fire on St. Patrick's Day. More than forty-five bodies were found in the ruins, some of them not until a month after the disaster.Later pictures of this block show the three-story Windsor Arcade for stores and offices, shortly to be erected, which filled the entire Fifth Avenue side of the block. A part of this will still be standing in 1920 alongside of the eight-story W. &. J. Sloane Building, built between 1910 and 1916, on the S.E. corner of 47th Street. By 1925 it will have given way to the twelve-story S. &. W. Straus Building.March 18, 1899.
