Designed by Ed Howard and established in the early 1930s, the park was named in honor of Donald Douglas, the aviation pioneer who in 1922 opened a factory and airfield at this site, which had previously been used as a movie studio. In 1927, the factory moved to Clover Field at Santa Monica Airport.
