Aerial view of Eastland Center located at 112 Plaza Drive in West Covina view is looking north. The mall stands north of the San Bernardino Freeway (10), seen horizontally at the bottom, between Barranca Ave. (vertically on the right), Citrus St. (vertically on the left), and Workman Ave. (horizontally at middle). Also visible are Clifton's Cafeteria and Longs Drugs. Photograph dated November 21, 1962. Eastland Center was designed by architect Albert C. Martin and opened in the fall of 1957 as an outdoor mall along the San Bernardino Freeway (10). The mall was unique at the time, as it had a regular mall on the upper level, and a strip center on the lower level facing the freeway. It opened with a 5-level May Company on the east end of the mall and a 2-level W.T. Grant on the west end. W.T. Grant closed in 1976 and was converted into shops on the upper level. The mall closed and expanded in 1979. Mervyns was added on to the west end of the mall in the 1980s.
