Monument to Philopappos To the southwest of the Acropolis, on the top of the Muses hill (Mus Hill, Museyon), there is a monument built by the Athenians in honor of Geius Jalius Antaiochas Filopappos, the grandson of the last king of Commagene and the distinguished philanthropist of Athens. He was a resident of Athens, and was very fond of Greek culture buried in 144 BC. The Greeks buried him on this hill, and erected a tomb of marble and a monument. As a sign of gratitude and memory to Philopappos, Muses Hill was renamed to Philopappos Hill. The monument to Philopappos is 9.80 x 9.30 m in size. It is built of white Pentelian marble on a 3.08 m high pedestal made of stone and tiled with gray "Hymettian" marble. The north side of the monument, which is visible from the Acropolis, is a facade, and carries architectural and artistic decoration
