Photograph caption dated May 18, 1987 reads, "Caltech students, who over the years have elevated college high jinks to a high-profile, high-tech art, today took their mischief to even loftier elevations- the Hollywood sign atop Mount Lee. As Los Angeles police and park rangers struggled to stop them from behind a locked fence, about 40 students from the Pasadena-based institution early today latched their school name in and white plastic onto the well-known-50 foot sign. The prank, executed in the wee hours of the night, cost about $800 and took about a year to plan, said the students, who are well-versed in devising and implementing such stunts. In 1984, Caltech students tapped into the Rose Bowl computerized scoreboard, forcing it to display 'Cal Tech 38, MIT 0' instead of the real score. The purpose behind today's stunt: to commemorate Hollywood's centennial."
